The Watchman

Dedication is often not noticed.

At night, I sit and watch, hardly ever touching you.

I have no need to be silent. You are a heavier sleeper than you think you are.

It makes me happy when you smile during your dreams.

I’m kinda like your night watchman. I ensure nobody sneaks into your bedroom to harm you while you sleep.

It’s been a long time since we first met. It was your freshman year of college.

You’re 43 now.

I can’t believe I have been protecting you for 24 years.

That’s dedication.

That’s love.

That’s…

Oh, your alarm will be going off in 17 minutes. I should be leaving.

I kiss you goodbye before I leave like I always do, and you kiss me back, automatically, like you always have, without remembering it.

See you tomorrow night, baby.

Sometimes, the best way to help someone is to do nothing at all. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. But starve him, and he’ll learn on his own.
